La montée du héros d'action féminin: trouver l'autonomisation en se battant comme une fille

Le Mois des superproductions célèbre les véritables titans du genre. Dans les semaines à venir, vous découvrirez une variété de fonctionnalités approfondissant les plus grands succès d'Hollywood, des classiques du pop-corn aux joyaux sous-estimés. Aujourd'hui, Jenn Adams retrace la montée, l'évolution et de nombreux tropes du héros d'action féminin.

Les films d'action sont le pain et le beurre de la superproduction estivale. Il y a juste quelque chose à passer une chaude nuit d'été dans un théâtre climatisé, à regarder des explosions à couper le souffle et des scènes de combat épiques. Au centre de ces films se trouve le héros d'action. Le trope a connu de nombreuses itérations au fil des ans. De la force brute de Rocky et Rambo au réalisme de Jason Bourne. Le savoir-faire technologique de James Bond, l'esprit de Will Smith et l'autre monde de Superman. Mais sans doute la star d'action la plus emblématique de tous les temps est Arnold Schwarzenegger. Il incarne l'extrême masculinité, la force, le détachement et les lignes simples que nous associons à ce type de personnage. Enfer, il a été choisi comme la représentation emblématique du trope en 1993 Dernier héros d'action.

Le héros d'action féminine est beaucoup plus rare. Comme Eve, elle est née de sa relation avec ses homologues masculins et a tenu à des attentes si étroites que nous avons peu d'exemples réussis. Les premières stars de l'action féminine peuvent être décrites comme des femmes prenant les caractéristiques masculines acceptées de la force. Nous voyons cela littéralement dans ExtraterrestreEllen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), un personnage écrit à l'origine comme un homme. Mais ils ont évolué au fil des ans et commencent à raconter leurs propres histoires. Mon film préféré de tous les temps est Terminator 2: Jour du jugement. J'ai grandi en regardant ma copie VHS éditée pour la télévision presque tous les jours, et cela semble réel, contrairement à d'autres films. En grandissant, l'héroïne du film, Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton) était mon idéal de force féminine. Elle est forte d'une manière que je voulais être, et elle n'a pas peur. En tant que mère, elle se bat pour son fils, mais au lieu de le réconforter, elle le protège froidement même au prix de leur relation.

Son homologue masculin dans le film est The Terminator (Schwarzenegger), une machine non programmée pour l'empathie. Son arc tourne autour de l'apprentissage de ce que sont les émotions et pourquoi les humains les ressentent. Sarah a un parcours similaire. Pour survivre, elle a dû éteindre ces instincts en elle-même et elle a du mal à les rallumer. Ils apprennent tous les deux à aimer, mais l'arc de The Terminator est présenté comme extraordinaire tandis que celui de Sarah est un retour à l'ordre établi. Parce que nos premières itérations de héros d'action féminins étaient des anomalies, la façon dont la société a su les accepter était de leur donner les qualités que nous apprécions chez nos héros masculins. Les armes de Sarah sont des armes à feu et elle se bat comme The Terminator. Ils communiquent comme une machine bien huilée car ils parlent le même langage de combat. Mais sa froideur s'est présentée comme un obstacle à surmonter, alors que dans The Terminator, c'est sa force à embrasser.

Depuis sa création, Hollywood a rarement permis aux femmes d'être plus que des mères ou des objets sexuels, et donc le héros d'action féminin doit également avoir ces traits. Mais The Terminator n'a pas à vivre dans ces limites. Il ne peut exister que pour botter le cul. Les femmes ne sont pas autorisées à agir comme les hommes très longtemps sans être punies. Uma Thurman en tant que The Bride est une autre étape intéressante dans le sous-genre des héros d'action féminins. Bien que révolutionnaire, elle et les autres assassines féminines sont fétichisées par le réalisateur Quentin Tarantino et ses idées emblématiques de ce que signifie fort et féminin. Un personnage similaire est Resident Evil’S Alice (Milla Jovavich). Librement basé sur le jeu d'horreur de survie, Jovavich a maintenu la même longévité de succès en franchise que des stars comme Sylvester Stallone et Tom Cruise, mais à plus petite échelle. La franchise Resident Evil est une horreur de genre qui n'a jamais vraiment percé le grand public, bien-aimée dans une communauté déjà connue pour embrasser la non-conformité. Une évolution importante dans le genre du film d'action est l'émergence et la domination des films de bandes dessinées. Et tandis que des personnages comme Mystique, Black Widow et Captain Marvel sont remarquables, Wonder Woman est sans doute le plus puissant. Commençant comme l'homologue de Superman, la dernière itération, jouée par Gal Gadot, a pris sa propre vie.

Bien que le voyage de Wonder Woman à travers No-Man’s Land soit un peu sur le nez, il me fait toujours pleurer. 2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is another significant step on the road to empowerment and representation. Directed by Cathy Yan, this film is about imperfect women kicking ass in their own ways, listening to their intuition instead of taking orders from men. Featuring a diverse cast of women, it’s led by Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), whose transformation from 2017’s Suicide Squad is striking.

Dans Suicide Squad, she is sexualized almost constantly. Existing to pine for The Joker who clearly views her as his own property. Two club scenes perfectly illustrate this dichotomy. Dans Suicide Squad, she dances sexily and teases a man for the amusement of Mr. J. But in Birds of Prey, her dancing is rave-like, her clothes are more androgynous, and she even throws up in a stranger’s purse. She is allowed to be human. Beautiful, but flawed. Iconic, but relatably unique. Dans Birds of Prey, she’s no longer pining for the Joker, but for a breakfast sandwich. Learning to stand on her own, she becomes more than just a pretty face.

But she is not the only one seeking freedom. Birds of Prey tells the story of five unique women breaking away from the systems that have controlled them. Their relationships with each other are complex, but they succeed by fighting together. (The moment when Harley gives Black Canary a hair tie always makes me cheer.) They are all unique. While some dress sexily, none are over sexualized — and they fight in different ways.

Harley’s weapons of choice are glitter-loaded smoke bombs and roller skates. The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) takes a more masculine approach with her motorcycle and crossbow. And Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) uses her voice as her most powerful weapon. Harley uses her voice as well, unabashedly telling her own story in her own way. An empowering cinematic choice in a world where women’s voices are too often silenced.

One reason we don’t see female stars lead decades-long action franchises is because Hollywood traditionally does not allow women to age in the same way as men, relegating women of a certain age to more matronly roles. However, we’re starting to see iconic women like Jamie Lee Curtis and Linda Hamilton reprise their roles, anchoring legacy sequels like Halloween 2018 et Terminator: Dark Fate. A matriarchy is emerging along with an important change in our perceptions.

By embracing our favorite heroines as human, gray hair and all, we can let everyone else off the hook as well. Dans Dark Fate, we see that The Terminator has become a husband figure who helps with the groceries and designs drapes for children’s bedrooms. While played for laughs, it’s an important step, a commentary on our reluctance to let male stars explore different elements of their personalities as well. Like women, we strive to make them ideals rather than human beings. And this is how the patriarchy hurts everyone. When we lose the rigid guidelines of who we are supposed to be, we can all show that our strengths lie in our uniqueness. We can take our stories in our own hands and tell them the way we want to.

While Dark Fate is directed by a man, it is feminist in showing a diverse matriarchy made up of complex human beings. Sarah now leads a group of women who don’t see themselves as necessary only for the existence of a male leader. They see that they are the ones who can lead. If we are brave enough to follow, we will see what Sarah Conner knew to be true all along: There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves.
